Perplexing Flash!

Yesterday, i was out in NYC trying to get some pictures of the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller center. This has been sorta my annual tradition. I had the family with me and didnt choose to take my external flash, and choose instead to use the built-in flash.

I set it up with Slow Rear sync, and hit the shutter button. No flash. Looked at the settings (thinking i might have mistakenly put it in Commander mode etc…) Everything looked great.

Tried changing the mode to Programmed, Digital Vario Programs, Nothing worked – The flash just didnt work.

Then, something happened. I clicked on the shutter button holding the camera at arms length – Bingo! the flash worked.

I shot a few pictures like this – holding my SLR as a P&S – at arms length – shooting blind basically. The flash worked.

I was intrigued. I asked my wife to carefully look at what was different when i took a shot at arms length and when i moved the viewfinder close to my eyes.

Ah ha! the cap!

I was wearing a baseball cap – and believe it or not, the cap’s hood was covering the flash sensor – blocking it from firing. Isnt this incredible!

How silly of me!
