Thoughts for the week
- My take on why there are no (or little) details on the D300 samples – as opposed to the D3 is a clever marketing strategy. Nikon wants all current D2X users to buy D3 and not D300 – which may otherwise appear to be an upgrade as well (for lot less!).
- If anyone is interested in my D70s ACR settings – Tint: 11, Exposure: 0.95, Shadows:0, Contrast: 1, Saturation:0, Shadow Tint: -3, Red Hue: -20, Red Sat: 73, Green Hue: -12, Green Sat: -34, Blue Hue: 13, Blue Sat: -10. These settings apply to all versions of ACR and to both Adobe Raw as well as Lightroom.
- Fall is fast approaching – keep an eye peak colors.
- Forum deja’vu: I have been feeling more and more that most forum topics are either the same repeats or similar in nature. They also similar threads in all forums at any given point of time. I guess – i will visit these less and less – Now, if there was only some way to synchronize OPML feeds across forums and get only unique ones…that would be real treat!
On choices…
- There is Nikon, then there is Canon (and several others)
- There is Epson, then there is HP (and several others)
- There is Hahnemnhle, then there is Legion (and several others)
- There is Gitzo, then there is Bogen (and several others)
- There is Lightroom, then there is Photoshop (and several others)
- There is Mac, then there is a PC (and very few others)
But the good thing is that there are choices. Just take your pick, but make your decision – any choice is just as good!
Venting Lightroom
The more i use LR – the more i find the few of its faults very hard to live with. Here are my experiences with them:
- Speed – Its slow! In fact – if you have a large collection of images, its better to create multiple catalogs (1999-2000) rather than having a single database (which defeats the fundamental purpose of DAM). If there is some way to swap out the “SQL Lite” database that it runs against and maybe use Oracle or something like that as the backend engine – i think we may have an “Enterprise” application” – Adobe – are you listening?
- The application is “half-baked” (at least in reference to “my” workflow) – its neither here nor there. Its neither a fully featured DAM application nor a full editing tool. Adobe thinking cleverly, took apart the very popular “Bridge”, added a few “enhancements” – made millions at $200 a pop. Of course, there are a few images that have only seen LR all its life from injest to print. But, these are the few that never made it anywhere else but my storage box. Eventually – down the line, if Adobe brings in pixel editing capabilities to RAW (which is very likely in future) this will be a great tool.
- Speaking of workflow, Its a very heavy application for “my” workflow. I often spend more time in Photoshop rather than LR. I have realized that i have been using the tool for its DAM capabilities rather than for its editing qualities. As a DAM tool. I must however admit that – there is a specific audience and purpose for this tool (wedding photographers come to mind), but i am not one. Read more
