Filters…

I have often read and heard from people that if its only one filter that you wish to buy/use – get the Polarizer.

I hate to say it, but disagree.

Polarizer is one of the easiest effects that you can recreate digitally. Of course, there are a few select situations such as removing reflections that you cannot do effectively – but this can be controlled during shooting the image. Just move around until you find the right vantage point with no reflections!

My take on this is that if its only one filter that you wish to buy – get the neutral density filter. There is absolutely no other way – digitally or otherwise that lets you do all the wonderful things that this filter lets you do.

The Irony…

“Pro” photographers and serious photographers often use a variety of gadgets and techniques to “bypass” the standard built-in camera controls. Of course, i am talking about:

  • Shooting RAW instead of JPEG
  • Using Expodisc or equivalent instead of AWB or built in WB controls
  • Using “M” (manual) exposure instead of any of the number of automatic options available.
  • Using external meters instead of the built-ins
  • Image settings, tonal variations, color modes, picture styles, program modes, and several other things that is built into the camera these days…

So, in essence, we pay these hefty value to all these features in the camera that we never use. It seems we *could* potentially be just as happy with an ergonomic camera body that just shoots RAW.

We dont need no stinking EXPEED or DIGIC! give us a discount instead.

Bored…

I haven’t been writing much these days….frankly, i am getting bored with photography in general. Its not like a writer’s block, in fact – now a days everyone is a photographer. I was recently out in a park early in the morning and found there were at least 2 more with fancy camera gear. I recently heard in one of the podcasts that they were at Yosemite at 5:30am in the morning and they were contesting on tripod space….i have heard quite a few of similar stories.

I think Photography is now mainstream. Nikon’s new cameras (D300 and D3) are not even out yet, but are already on the list of “top cameras” – from amazon to dpreview! Read more
