The way Adobe is thinking about this, this may be the last part in the ACR series. The previous part can be read here.
With the announcement of DNG Profiles, Adobe may have finally closed the loop on the need for calibration aspects of ACR for most people. Purists may still need to tweak this, but so far – i am quite happy and the results are actually very good.
So, what exactly is this thing?
In simple words – This is adobe’s take on coming up with better camera profiles for Nikon and Canon cameras. If you own a recent DSLR from either of these two manufacturers, Adobe has created camera profiles that are really excellent. In fact, if you have a Nikon camera – this is about as close as you can get to Capture NX standards using Adobe’s Lightroom or Bridge.
So, how do you use it?
First step is to download the beta camera profiles from the Adobe’s link above. Follow instructions to unzip and install these profiles in the right place in your LR’s folders. All you will need to do now is to open a RAW image, go over to the Develop module, and select the drop down in the
Camera Calibration’s Profile drop down. You are in for a real treat! Not only did Adobe provide you with profiles for the “Adobe Standard beta 1″ generic profiles – but also with the Nikon picture styles! (See screenshot on the right).
Play with the profiles, and once you are happy with it and decide to use it for all images as a default, select from the Develop menu ->Set default settings, and select Update to current settings. Of course, you have to make sure you have selected the options in the preferences dialog as below. You are all done.
I have compared the profiles against NX – and amazed as how good they are. Good job adobe!
So, anybody out there want to buy a almost new XRite colorchecker target?
