When you post an image for critique on one of the several photography forums – and ask for critique. Most likely chances are – You will get it.
There are at least 50% of the population out there that don’t like you shit. Then there are others that may offer some tips to make it better (to them). Then there are others – who probably are too excited or drink too much Kool-Aid all the time and are gaga over everything. You can’t expect much from these guys anyways.
So, here are a few tips and things I have to say about this:
- Think about why you are posting the image – is it for feedback or critique? Are you expecting to learn from your (or others who are looking at your image) mistakes?
- Are you just sharing your picture? Are you sharing your experience or documenting a travel?
- Are you showing or educating others about your new technique?
- Are you looking at starting a new discussion about the location or technique?
A while ago, Mike Johnston posted an article on what would be the kind of feedback one would if some of the best known images from top photographers were posted on the several forums…The result: Read it for yourself here (and Part II is here).
PS: While you are at it, check out this flickr discussion as well.
With that said, I would like to add that I personally have learnt and grown from showing my photographs to others. It gives you an opportunity to see your own images from the eyes of a different person. Is is at that point – your choice and option to make use of the feedback (or not). I have more than once have benefited from having my images reviewed and their feedback incorporated.
It is my personal belief that peer review is very critical to grow as a photographer.
